MAGICAL FAIRYLAND

Magical Fairyland

by Adam Allegro

In addition to a wonderful trip to Roma and Napoli this past weekend, we also headed down the Amalfi Coast for some sightseeing, wine consumption, and amazing food.  Highlighted in this little jaunt was the ocean side town of Sorrento.  Rich in culture and beauty, Sorrento is home to some truly amazing spots.  One of my favorite places to see is Il Vallone dei Mulini (Deep Valley of the Mills).
An abandoned mill falling to ruin, Il Vallone sits quietly by itself at the bottom of the valley, surrounded on all sides by cliffs and shrubs.  It dates back to 900 AD and was used for supplying water to the town of Sorrento.  Abandoned in 1866 for a variety of reasons, including the intense heat buildup in the summer being too much for workers to handle, it was left at the bottom of this valley to slowly crumble.  I read somewhere that the property had just been purchased by a private party and might be fixed up as a tourist attraction or turned in to a hotel.  Every time I see it is just as stunning as the last.  Enjoy!
